How would an operating system KNOW it is being run in virtualization? It cannot determine the difference from a real computer. We are talking about Vista like it is an artificial intelligence of some kind.

I suppose that depends on how you define artifical intelligence... Anyway, to answer your point, Vista can determine if you are running the software in a virtual environment. Virtualization requires the OS to be embedded in further software, and that software has distinct signitures that can be pulled out by the OS. It might be possible to add patches to prevent Vista from seeing those signatures, but who knows.

On another front, if MS were wise, they would take some advice from Apple's iTunes and use a deactivation feature. This would prevent a huge stress on their phone support and tremendously add to user happiness. If there ever became an issue with Windows, or someone needed to upgrade, then they could go ahead and deactivate that copy of windows or deauthorize the account (through safe mode in the case of OS problems). Then, the software could be reinstalled without worry and reactivated.

Sober up, Steve. Less time on Time Machine and more time on solidifying the system.

AppleTalk: Who uses it, and why?

I'm pretty sure that any time you use Personal file sharing, you are using AppleTalk.

EDIT: More info... Personal File Sharing is based off of Apple Filing Protocol (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Filing_Protocol). From wikipedia:

AFP versions 3.0 and greater rely exclusively on TCP/IP (port 548 or 427) for establishing communication, supporting AppleTalk only as a service discovery protocol. The AFP 2.x family supports both TCP/IP and AppleTalk for communication and service discovery. Many third-party AFP implementations use AFP 2.x, thereby supporting AppleTalk as a connection method. Still earlier versions rely exclusively on AppleTalk. For this reason, some older literature refers to AFP as "AppleTalk Filing Protocol". Other literature may refer to AFP as "AppleShare," the name of the Mac OS 9 (and earlier) AFP client.

Wow, amazing how emotional people always get whenever I make a statement that could sound slightly anti-iPod... I know you love your iPod and all (I am very fond of mine myself), but over the last few years Apple has been focusing a dispropotional amount of energy into their cute little gadget which has massively boosted their profits. For those of us that don't salivate over all things iPod, I think this is too bad.

    That is all.
Apple revamped their entire line of computers this year, a massive change over to a new CPU architecture and sales have increased accordingly. What more do you want from them exactly?

Personally I think your vision is very skewed. The iPod line up has languished this year in comparison to the computer line up.

Out of the 5 predictions above, only #1 and #4 have any chance of happening, and even that chance is slim to none.

The first would happen as Samsung arguably make the best panels. The second will happen because Apple Inc now con any one dumb enough to believe the rubbish the spout. iSheep will line up because the great almighty Steve will claim it to be magical and revolutionary.

Samsung and Sony will never go out of business. The respective governments have far to much invested in them. Sony make some great products. The computer side is lacking at the moment, but that will not remain the case. Samsung make great televisions.

Apple would be stupid to enter the TV market. There is no profit left. It is going to be going through a huge change over the next 5 years.

    1) When will the iPhone 5 actually be released?
    2) Should I go to Chipotle for lunch?

Aside from the whole "personal responsibility" debate, why doesn't Apple just allow cancel/refund of purchases as long as it is done before the download is finished (meaning it's impossible to use)?

Seems like a no brainer to me.

1mm thicker, but the 30 or so people voting negatively are waaaaayyy thicker, and that rating system on the front page is colossally thick... and it's not enough that pretty much everyone hates that rating system, now we even have a rating system for posts... talk about anal retentiveness...:apple:

I will not use any cloud stuff anyway, if it's free or not doesn't matter. No need for government and corporations to gather even more data on everybody. It's a sour pill wrapped in a thin layer of sugar. Everybody embracing this cloud stuff seems to either be not very well informed or simply doesn't value freedom and the simple democratic rule of "innocent until proven otherwise".

It didn't take my 10 year old son long to figure out that he could continue to download apps after asking me to download one for him. Now, if he wants a free app, I wait for it to finish downloading and then i log out of my account before i hand his touch back to him!

    It hasn't been fixed.

well it's kinda weird - ip4 is fast enought to have NO animation problems. This started exacly the same as 3G problems on iOS3.x.

In a few months we all know that ip4 is too slow, too old and we would need to switch to ip5 :/

it is sad to see that Apple don't care about performance anymore...

Honestly Microsoft will fail, and it's not because they are going to take forever to show anyone anything. Microsoft will fail because it doesn't understand the demographic it is trying to produce a product for. Microsoft may cater to business and such, but in the eyes of teenagers, many of whom are anti-establishment, Microsoft is simply not cool. Not only is Microsoft uncool, it doesn't understand what IS cool.

True, but as i have send in a previous thread about MS, the people behind their XBox division are actually "cool" and creative and MS is said to be giving them lots of freedom. Let's not wholeheartly disregard our competition here - even though it feels good to do so!

    That's all you got?

    What don't I get?

How I can get a 3GS for $50? Or how I can get a 3GS for $50 with a $10/month additional line? Please tell me how.

Or why paying 90% of the total cost for a 4 and only getting a 3GS is a good deal.

Walt Mossberg wrote a very interesting article in the Wall Street Journal about 2 weeks ago in which he said independent research had noted that 19% of all college students now use a Mac. That number is expected to grow leaps and bounds by this time next year.
I would love to see this article -- can anyone PM me a link or post it here??
